Antionette “Toni” Thomas was born May 2, 1955, to Geraldine and Herman Thomas in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was the only girl amongst five brothers. Toni departed this life on Thursday, November 4, 2021.
Toni, as a child enjoyed roller skating, dancing, listening to music, particularly from Motown artists. She would often assist her mom in work, care of younger siblings, as well as work around the home until her mother’s death when she was thirteen years old. Following the loss of her mother, she and her siblings went to live with their father. Toni would continue to receive her education from the Jersey City Public Schools. She would also go on to live with her Aunt Doll in Newark, New Jersey.
In January 1972, Toni would give birth to her eldest son, Jermaine Thomas. She would remain in Jersey City, working and taking care of her son until she moved to South Carolina, in effort to better herself. In October 1977, Toni would give birth to her daughter, Evelyn Thomas, son Rodger Thomas in June of 1982, to be followed by youngest daughter, Daisy Thomas in May 1983. In the early ’90s, Toni would move from Bowman, South Carolina to Mississippi. Following Hurricane Katrina, Toni returned to Bowman, South Carolina, and remained until her health declined in 2019. Toni was a hard worker and worked various jobs to support herself and her children. She was known to be very strong-willed, outgoing, candid with a sense of humor, and enjoyed being around her family and friends. She would faithfully attend a family church every Sunday in Bowman, SC.
She is survived by her four children: Jermaine (Lukia) Thomas, of Jersey City, NJ; daughter, Evelyn (Derrick) Richburg, of Miami, Fl; son, Rodger Thomas, of Pascagoula, MS; and daughter, Daisy Thomas, of Ocean Springs, MS; siblings, Allen Thomas, Herman “Boo” (Regina) Thomas, Michael (Derene) Thomas, Douglas Thomas and Darrell (Rose) Thomas; 9 grandchildren, Jernaya, Jaidon, J’yana, Jermaine “Junior”, and Lance Thomas, Steve, Jr., and Aaron Thomas, and Aaralyn and Mya Richburg. Toni also leaves behind nieces and nephews, cousins, in addition to a host of relatives and friends.
